MOBISCRIBE ORIGIN vs QUIRKLOGIC PAPYR: Which e-ink tablet is best?

This page was created to explore the similarities and differences between two e-ink tablets; the MOBISCRIBE ORIGIN, and the QUIRKLOGIC PAPYR.

This is currently a simplified comparison consisting of a table of side-by-side specifications, and review cards of each tablet, outlining their pros and cons. If a tablet has a rating then you can also click on it for a full and detailed review of the tablet.

I do write detailed ‘versus‘ comparisons, however because I am only one person it is impractical for me to compare every single e-ink tablet against every other one! So if you think that this page would benefit from being fleshed out with additional information and my own thoughts and opinions, then feel free to drop me an email at dan@ewritable.com – I will prioritise pages that get the most requests 🙂

I have also created a gigantic e-ink comparison table (which is also searchable/filterable, so you can whittle down your search to the tablets that best meet your needs).

And a list of (what I believe to be) the best e-ink tablets can be found here.

Now, onto the comparison between the MOBISCRIBE ORIGIN and the QUIRKLOGIC PAPYR.

MOBISCRIBE ORIGIN Review Card

Overall rating

Pros

  • Small
  • Lightweight
  • Inexpensive
  • Frontlight
  • Decent native note-taking app
  • Handwriting search
  • Handwriting-to-text conversion

Cons

  • Small canvas size
  • Sunken screen
  • Stylus feels cheap
  • Screen size limits reading capabilities
  • Not as 'snappy' as more premium tablets

The Mobiscribe Origin is perhaps the most portable of E-ink tablets, with a 6.8" screen and weighing just 228g. It has since been superseded by the Mobiscribe Wave and Mobiscribe Wave Color, which are waterproof.

QUIRKLOGIC PAPYR Review Card

Overall rating

Pros

  • Large screen size
  • Enterprise solution
  • Great collaboration tools (inc. real-time collaboration)
  • Awesome for presentations
  • Stylus has highlight and erase buttons
  • Infinite zoom capability

Cons

  • Has been discontinued
  • No support
  • Company has disappeared
  • Very limited applications
  • Stylus requires battery/charging
  • Note-taking and e-reading limited
  • Slower stylus latency and processing
  • No pressure sensitivity

UPDATE: Quirklogic have closed down their Inkworks whiteboarding and collaboration system - this was perhaps the best thing about the Papyr. Their website has gone offline an I get no response from their support email. Therefore this device has now lost its best features and its rating has been adjusted accordingly.
