SUPERNOTE A5 X vs BOOX MAX LUMI 2: Which e-ink tablet is best?

This page was created to explore the similarities and differences between two e-ink tablets; the RATTA SUPERNOTE A5 X, and the ONYX BOOX MAX LUMI 2.

This is currently a simplified comparison consisting of a table of side-by-side specifications, and review cards of each tablet, outlining their pros and cons. If a tablet has a rating then you can also click on it for a full and detailed review of the tablet.

I do write detailed ‘versus‘ comparisons, however because I am only one person it is impractical for me to compare every single e-ink tablet against every other one! So if you think that this page would benefit from being fleshed out with additional information and my own thoughts and opinions, then feel free to drop me an email at dan@ewritable.com – I will prioritise pages that get the most requests 🙂

Additional E-Ink Tablet Resources

If you’re new to e-ink tablets, you may wish to take a look at:

I have also created a gigantic e-ink comparison table (which is also searchable/filterable, so you can whittle down your search to the tablets that best meet your needs).

And a list of (what I believe to be) the best e-ink tablets can be found here.

Now, onto the comparison between the RATTA SUPERNOTE A5 X and the ONYX BOOX MAX LUMI 2.

RATTA SUPERNOTE A5 X Review Card

Overall rating

Pros

  • Fantastic substitute for a paper notebook
  • Ceramic stylus tips that never need replacing
  • Lovely writing feel
  • Quick and easy navigation
  • Well-structured notebooks
  • Best handwriting search
  • Excellent after-sales service
  • Nice range of additional tools (Email / Calendar / Word Doc editor / Kindle etc.)

Cons

  • Steeper learning curve
  • Notebooks not easily viewable on other devices when using third-party clouds
  • Partner app requires more work
  • No frontlight
  • No auto-synchronisation

The Supernote A5 X (and smaller A6 X) are perhaps the best digital replacements for paper-based notebooks for those that love to write.

ONYX BOOX MAX LUMI 2 Review Card

Overall rating

Pros

  • Large 13.3" screen
  • Great hardware specs
  • Very versatile
  • Sophisticated native reading & note-taking apps
  • Handwriting search/conversion
  • Google Play Store
  • Frontlight
  • Audio (speakers and microphone)

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Limited availability
  • Steeper learning curve
  • Writing feels a little 'slippy'
  • Larger footprint
  • Stylus does not magnetically stick to the tablet

The Onyx Boox Max Lumi 2 has a large screen, frontlight and the ability to expand its capabilities with apps from the Google Play Store. But this comes at a cost, with this device being one of the most expensive e-ink tablets on the market. Boox have now ceased production of this model and replaced it with the Tab X
