Boox recently launched the Tab X, an A4-sized eNote that looks to be the natural successor to the Max Lumi 2.
But what exactly are the differences between the two tablets? This is the question that I will aim to answer in this article.
First, the similarities…
Both devices use a monochrome 13.3″ Mobius Carta (flexible plastic) screen with a resolution of 1650 x 2200 and 207DPI.
They have similarly impressive hardware specs: 1.8Ghz octa-core processors, 6Gb of RAM and 128Gb of storage. They both have front lights, WiFi, Bluetooth, USB-C, speakers and a microphone. And they both run the Android 11 OS and have full access to the Google Play Store.
Now on to the differences…
Although the hardware specs are very similar, the Tab X has an additional graphics processor (GPU), which works alongside Boox’s Super Refresh software to ensure smooth viewing when using apps that use a higher refresh rate – this can include tasks like web browsing and even watching videos.
To provide the additional power needed for this new technology, the Tab X is fitted with a 6300mAh battery, whilst the Max Lumi 2 has just 4300mAh.
The height and the width of both devices are exactly the same, however, the Tab X is 4.1mm thinner and 10g lighter.
The Tab X is fitted with a G-Sensor, which means the screen will autorotate between landscape and portrait when it is physically rotated.
The Tab X also ships with the Pen2 Pro Stylus, which has an eraser at the top end. The Max Lumi 2 ships with the Pen Plus, which doesn’t have an eraser.
Although both devices are installed with Android 11 and essentially have the same operating system capabilities, the Tab X utilises Boox’s new user interface, which is a lot more customizable and looks very similar to LCD Android tablets.
At the time of writing, the UK price for a brand new Max Lumi 2 was around £820, with the Tab X costing £880, a full £60 more. However, worldwide stocks of the Max Lumi 2 are very low as Boox seems to be phasing out the older model, so the device may be difficult to source. Stocks of the Tab X seem to be plentiful at the present time.
I’ve summarised the differences in the table below:

About the author
Dan Dutton is passionate about E-ink writing tablets, which bring together the pleasure of writing on paper with the power of digital technology. When he bought his first tablet, he realised that there wasn't a lot of unbiased information available for people that were considering buying an E-ink tablet, and so he built eWritable.
Thanks…nice summary.
